The Gardener’s Hut
The Gardener’s Hut is a thatched wattle and daub building that was built by volunteers.
The wooden frame is elm from the garden of one of the volunteers, whilst the wattle and daub was all found in the grounds of the Prebendal Manor.
The exterior walls have been painted with lime wash to protect them from the weather. The interior walls have been covered with lime plaster to fill the gaps and to make a smooth surface. The floor is of beaten earth but has also been covered with any plaster that fell when the walls were being plastered.
The volunteers did sleep in the hut one frosty night on a bed of straw. They insist that they were very warm.
The hut is used to store the gardener’s tools and sundries. It sometimes is used to display crafts such as weaving.
